Don’t leave everything until the day before the big move. Try to work out what you don’t need to take with you, what things will need special packing, and make sure that your valuable items are covered for potential damages.

  • Go through all the contents of your current home and get rid of anything you don’t really need. The Charity shop will be more than happy to take these items off your hands. Or if you decide to sell these items then plan in advance and organise a car boot sale or use e-bay. This way you could use the money you receive for some decorating or new carpets for your new home.

  • Acquire all the packing materials you need for the entire relocation. Calculate how many boxes you will need. Always get a variety of sizes. Small boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lighter ones. Also, try and keep the overall weight of your boxes to a minimum so as to avoid back injuries that can occur if not lifted correctly. Also strong tape, bubble wrap and self-seal bags (for small bits and bobs). Remember to save any newspapers that you have for lining the boxes. Why not have one of our packing kits delivered and save yourself the hassle of buying and collecting all the packing materials (30 Boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, maker pen and a tape gun for only £50).

hobbs removals tips

  • Make sure that you use robust packing boxes like the type we use here at Hobbs Removals Company Milton Keynes. These boxes are made of corrugated cardboard and are sturdier than regular boxes. With Hobbs you can have as many of these as you need, in all the available sizes, delivered to your door prior to the move.

  • Take time to consider ‘how’ you are going to pack your personal items to be moved. Valuable things will need careful wrapping with special packing materials. Some of your furniture may need to be dismantle. Will you do this or the removals company.

  • Place any hazardous materials that you need into a secure plastic box to avoid spillage, such things as bleach, cleaning fluids, ect and let the removal company be aware of these items.

tips for moving day

  • Label each box clearly with the details of the room it belongs in and what it contains.

  • Try to keep all of your boxes for each room together. This can save time and help when unpacking.

  • It may be stating the obvious but always remember to pack your heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter ones on top.

  • Pack all of your important documents (e.g. birth certificates, marriage certificates, ect) together and keep them safe.

  • Put together an overnight bag which will have everything you need for every member of the family, such as toilet paper, tooth paste and other toiletries.

  • Another box for useful items, such as a torch, medicines, first-aid kit, a tool kit ect, should also be kept close at hand on moving day.
